Simplified Color Prep Guide

Honest Labor

    • Flatten to one video track.

    • Remove effects, transitions, audio, and graphics. Linear speed ramps are OK—remove dynamic ones.

    • Extend shot lengths to account for removed transitions or FX.

    • Unnest any nested or multicam clips.

    • Relink all clips to original RAW media.

    • Export XML or AAF. Include backup EDLs (one per video track).

Why this matters: A clean timeline helps us quickly conform your project and ensures nothing is missing or misaligned when we begin color grading.

    • Upload or deliver on a duplicate shuttle drive (not your master).

    • Include only clips used in the final edit.

    • Trimmed clips must include 2-second handles on head and tail.

Why this matters: This ensures we’re grading from the highest quality source footage.

    • Export a frame-accurate QuickTime matching the XML or AAF.

    • Burn in source timecode and clip names.

    • Recommended format: ProRes 422 or H.264, 1920x1080.

Why this matters: This file acts as a technical checklist. It helps confirm everything is correctly linked and sized before we begin grading.

    • Include all audio, graphics, VFX, and baked-in dailies color.

    • Often used as a reference for client feedback—it helps us understand their expectations during review.

Why this matters: This shows us what the final cut is meant to look like. It helps ensure your creative intent carries through the grade.

Deadline: 4:00 p.m. ET the business day before your session. This gives us the time to make sure everything’s set and ready to go. Late delivery may delay your session or incur a rush fee.
